Astonishingly good

Bought this as a gift for friends who don't smoke in their home, and spend many a chilly evening out on their patio. I had my doubts about the heating claims, but decided it was worth a shot.To my surprise, it turned out to be the hit of the holiday season. The instructions for putting it together are rather confusing, and it arrives with parts that are never used. You'll definitely want a mechanically-inclined friend around, and it will definitely take two people to hold the parts together as you assemble it.But once assembled, you'll be amazed at how effective it is. The top shield directs heat downward, and from fifteen feet away, you can feel the heat from the radiant-style grill. While not listed, the one I gave came with a handy counter attachment that forms a circular counter around the center pole approximately halfway between the heater and the base. Not much space, but enough to hold a drink and a pack of cigarettes for several people. And if you're standing next to the little counter, the heat is very effective.As others have commented, it doesn't claim to be weatherproof, so keep it out of the rain or cover it (SAFELY, once it has cooled down). One drawback is that it does go through a considerable amount of LP gas, so an extra tank is a good idea. As the pilot light is easily lit, you can also conserve some gas by extinguishing the pilot and lighting it with a candle lighter when ready to use it. And of course, NEVER use it in an enclosed space. It is combustion, after all, and burning it in a closed garage or inside a house could cause dangerous (and potentially fatal) carbon monoxide buildup. READ THOSE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS!While fairly stable, use caution when using it around children or hyperactive pets. And be careful if the wind is high, as it can be a bit top-heavy. But my friends have dearly loved it, using it at all hours of the day. I did a lot of research before purchasing, and I still think if you have natural gas lines near the desired location, buying a natural-gas permanent fixture would be better. But if not, I think you'll be pretty pleased with this item.
